The useful way to read it is not as a random list of big names, but as a set of three arrival hubs: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. If you land in one of those cities, you should know which exhibition cluster is closest and how to connect from the airport or high-speed rail station without wasting the first day.
Beijing, Beijing municipality

Arrival note: if you land at Capital Airport or Daxing Airport, go straight to the city-center museum zone first, then keep the rest of the day around Tian'anmen, Qianmen, or the Grand Canal / old city axis depending on your hotel. In Beijing, a museum day works best when the transfer is finished before noon.
Shanghai, Shanghai municipality
On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas at Shanghai Museum opens on July 9, 2026, and runs until November 14, 2027. That makes it the most obvious long-run blockbuster in the city. For summer visitors, the timing is perfect because you can pair it with a clean People's Square day and still have time for the Bund at night.
Giorgio Morandi: Solo at Museum of Art Pudong opens on June 17, 2026. If you are already in Pudong, this is the more refined art stop. If you only have one Shanghai museum day, use Shanghai Museum downtown first and MAP second.
Arrival note: from Hongqiao, go straight to People's Square if you want Shanghai Museum. From Pudong Airport, it is usually better to sleep in Pudong or near Lujiazui if MAP is your first exhibition target. After arrival, Shanghai rewards a simple metro-based museum day more than an ambitious cross-city sprint.
Guangzhou, Guangdong province
A Journey of Flower Discovery: An Exhibition of Chinese Flower Culture at Guangdong Museum runs through June 28, 2026. It is a good early-summer stop because it shows how a museum in southern China can turn a traditional theme into something visually fresh.
The Unceasing Aura at the Xuelei Fragrance Museum in Baiyun District is another useful Guangzhou anchor. It opened as a scent-themed museum and gives the city a more lifestyle-oriented exhibition choice for visitors who want something lighter than a classic history show.
Arrival note: if you land at Baiyun Airport, the best route is to get into the Pearl River New Town / central museum belt first, then branch to Baiyun or other districts on day two. Guangzhou works best when you connect the airport to one central base and do not over-split the city on the first afternoon.
How to read the national calendar
The national 20-show list is useful because it tells you where the big summer traffic is going. But for a foreign traveler, the smartest move is to compress that list into city hubs: Beijing for the capital’s civilizational showpiece, Shanghai for the large international blockbuster, and Guangzhou for the southern museum-and-lifestyle mix.
That is also how you should route the trip. Land, check in, do one museum block, eat nearby, and stop. The difference between a good museum trip and a tiring one is usually how much transit you leave for later.
